This is my 8 year old daughter, Abby. When she was born, she was just fine for height and weight (about 21 inches, 8 lbs. 3 oz.) At 3 months we found out she was loosing weight - she ended up weaning herself because I was forced to supplement with a bottle. We ended up putting her on soy formula. At around 18 months, she starting trending down on the growth charts. By 4, she was off the charts. She has been trending down ever since. Doctor never said a word. I got worried a year ago and asked the ped., who just laughed at me and said that "well, if she had anyone else for a mother, I'd be concerned." Meaning, that because I'm 5'1", and about 105 lbs, that Abby should be small. Nope, my oldest daughter at 15 was my size, and she has since shot up another inch. All of HER life, she has been on the 25th percentile lines for both height and weight, never fell off. So something is wrong with Abby, but what.
Finally got to a ped. endo. last November who ordered a GH Stim test and pit. MRI. All tests were normal. Her growth hormone peaked at 14. Then I read somewhere that just because a child makes GH when stimmed, doesn't mean they do that normally. So on my own, I ordered a 24 hour urine of her growth hormone. I got these results today, but can't make sense of them (even after googling.) Any ideas? We have follow-up with the ped. endo. in a month.
Here's what they gave me:
Growth Hormone/Creat. Ratio 1.7 ng/g
Reference Range:
Prepubertal (1-8 yr.):
Overnight collection 7.2 - 42
24 h collection 10.2 - 30.1
Growth Hormone Urine, 24 hr 0.4 ng/24 h
24 hr Creatinine, Urine 264 mg/24 h
Creatinine, Urine 66 mg/dL
Here are other labs for her from last Fall:
11/25/08 at 3:30 p.m.
TSH 1.68
Free T4: 0.9 (0.5 - 1.4)
IGFBP-3: 3.2 (1.6-6.5)
IGF-1: 87 L (97 - 352)
TTG IgA: <3 <5 negative
IgA: 66 (37-196)
labs I had done 1/15/09 at 8:45 a.m.
Free T4: 1.19 (0.81 - 1.68)
Free T3: 4.2 (2.9 - 6.0)
TSH: 3.038 (0.37 - 6.00)
TPO: <10
Tg ab: <20
sodium: 138
potassium: 4.5
chloride: 103 (97-108)
carbon dioxide: 16 L (20-32)
ferritin: 12 (Yes, I know this is low and I've got her on an iron supplement, and need to retest soon.)
cortisol: 21.8 (for females age 2 mos - 13 years: 2.4 - 22.9)
ACTH: 27 (6-48)
My gut still tells me there is something wrong with her gut. She stopped the soy formula at 1 year and went back to cow's milk, with seemingly no problems. But last year she kept complaining of diarrhea. So I switched her to Lactaid milk. That seemed to help, but recently she has told me about green poo. I asked my sister (used to be a ped. nurse) about that, and thinks that is bile getting through due to poorly digested milk fat. So this week she has just started on rice milk. I really, really, want to put the entire family on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, but am intimidated by the whole idea. I really do wonder if a lot of Abby's problems are due to not absorbing nutrients well. Overall, she is a bright, bouncy, healthy little girl (emphasis on "LITTLE.")
Thanks.
