Hi ladies, Just wanting to get a little input in regards to Mum's GH labs (not too concerned about the others as doc has covered them off). These weren't ready when we saw the doc. She's 67, post-meno. Most problematic symptoms are fatigue (especially in the afternoon) and declining cognitive function. It's to be expected that she'd be getting more tired at her age, but it's pretty bad, especially in the afternoons. She's already been DXed Hashi's (HypoT) by the doc and her ultrasound shows her thyroid is very small, bordering atrophy. She's been on thyroid extract and HC since January and had tweaks made to her sex hormone BHRT. We are upping DHEA to 50mg, upping bi-est, progesterone, thyroid extract to 150mg and tweaking dose schedule (may do T3-only protocol depending on how she responds to increased thryoid extract). No changes to melatonin, testosterone dosages. Here are the GH labs. Full labs, history, symptoms etc are here: forums.realthyroidhelp.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9369&p=73168#p73168 Growth Hormone and relatedGrowth Hormone 1.5 (0-15) IGF-1 35 (9-38) IGF BP3 169 (105-200) The binding protein looks pretty high to me, so I guess this is getting in the way of the IGF-1 working? I don't know much about this so would appreciate any info and guidance. thanks Allison

That doesn't look too bad.. it's sitting at the lower end of the 'good' range. In saying that, a single morning draw doesn't really give you a good picture of what's going on over 24hrs. Perhaps she could try a secretagogue and see if it helps any.

Hey fraggle, I'm having a blonde moment...which are you referring to? I'm confused about how to interpret the results. We might look at getting 24hr urine GH done depending on cost but since she's 67 I reckon it would be pretty low.

Sally,
How is your mother's FT3? If it's too low, this can impact her cognitive function. Thinking of my brain fog pre armour and when my FT3 drops.
Also, how is her B12? Low B12 can absolutely result in impaired cognitive function.

Hi Laurie,
Her B12 before starting Jarrow sublingual was 682 BUT she had been taking B multi for a few years so result would be skewed. She's now on 5000mg Jarrow sublingual daily and will keep that going indefinitely just to stay on the safe side. Her father and brother were both DXed with B12 deficiency (not sure what type) so she'll stay on B12.
As for thyroid results, on 120mg thyroid extract:
TSH 0.30 (0.40-4.00) Free T4 10.4 pmol/L (9.0-19.0) Free T3 4.5 pmol/L (2.6-6.0)
Doc wants her to up dose to 150mg and split the dose to 60mg on rising, 60mg at lunch and 30mg mid-late afternoon so we'll see if that helps.
Otherwise we are thinking she might need to do 12 week T3-only protocol as her RT3/FT3 ratio (done *before* starting thyroid meds) was too high, though not dramatically.
-------------------------------------
Before thyroid meds (taken Oct 08):
TSH 2.14 (0.40-4.00) Free T4 11.7 (9.0-19.0) Free T3 4.1 (2.6 - 6.0)
thanks!

Were latest thyroid labs before or after HC?
My grandma's thyroid was shriveled up to nothing on her post mortem exam. It's only been the last few years that we have been discovering the Hashi's/family connection. I think Grandma had PA(like me). She had to receive regular B12 injections for fatigue/tingling. She wa a hurting unit if she slacked off on the injections.
Your mom's ultrasound tells me she's had undiagnosed/untreated Hashi's for a long time!!
Any chance you could get your hands on some B12 injections, just to load your mom up more? High dose methy B12 lozenges(9,000mcg/day) didn't cut it for me. In theory it should have, but it didn't.

Laurie - your poor grandma.. I think I would've gone insane if I was her Allison - I was talking about Igf-1 levels. Laurie has made some really good points.

thanks ladies Laurie, yes she was on HC for 2-3 months before latest thyroid labs. And yeah the doc said she's likely had it for at least 10 years, mum thinks more like since puberty. Actually, she was dropped on her head as a baby on to a hard surface, so that's why I've been wanting to look into possible Pit problems. B12 injections -- not sure, I'll mention it to her. I know she's had them very sporadically when she's gone for chelation with the nutritional doc.
