Sorry, I don't know how this got by us. For everyone, just PM us if it's been more than 3 days.
13 year old I'm not familiar with that Igf-1 range, but may be indicating possible low GH. For adults I use range of 150-350. Sodium is low enough I would suspect he has salt wasting symptoms (salt craving, excess sweating and urination, hard to handle heat). Potassium being in the middle can go either way for primary or secondary AI. His fasting glucose is high for adults. Need fasting insulin. TSH is high (I look for 2.0 in teen and adult males), Free t4 is very low, need free t3. Where there is AI and hypo, usually there is hypogonadism, so ask for total and free testosterone, estradiol (E2), LH, FSH and SHBG. His ACTH and cortisol are pretty low and in my opinion point to him having secondary AI. Did he fast salt for the aldosterone and renin. If not needs redone, if so, both are very low. I use fasting aldosterone range of 4-22 and renin fasting 3-24. If fasting the low renin indicates secondary AI.
5 year old Can't give opinion of his igf-1, sodium and potassium because of his age. I just don't deal with young kids that often. His aldosterone and renin (if salt fasting, otherwise needs retesting), seem pretty low. Glucose can't give opinion. For TSH in young children I look for 2.5. His suggests he's primary hypo.
2 year old Igf-1 may be indicating low GH, but again, I don't deal with young children. Her potassium is suggestive that she's secondary AI and renin and ACTH are low. Her aldosterone and renin seem to be pretty low. That she drinks like a fish doesn't surprise me. Try giving her salt water and see if that helps her. I'm not sure what acth level would be good for her age, but I look for upper to 40s to low 50s in adults.
I've never heard of doc interpreting tests based on someone elses history. Can you say "QUACK!" You are finding out that endos are useless for anything besides testing. I recommend you find an osteopath (screen them on the phone first). I can recommend my doc here in St. Louis for them. He deals with kids as well as adults started as a pediatrican. PM me and I'll send you his website. When you get the stim (with acth too) I'll take a look. Also look the Wikipedia article I wrote "ACTH stimlulation test".
Sent you a PM.
You're welcome, Chris

I had T3's and such done by their primary back in Oct. This is what the endo did.
As far as him saying her low IGF-1 wasn't unusual - he had asked if dad 'grew' after high school and I told him I thought so. Of course when I asked hubby he said no he didn't. Anyway, like you said, I wouldn't think it would matter! She may have inherited the likelyhood of being low, but she's still LOW!
I've been doing research because I think this guy would read it. Do you have 'proof' of the things you've said? Like peer-reviewed journal articles? If so, can you tell me the sources? I said something about Broda Barnes and he right then looked him up (paperless office, so he had a laptop with him). That makes me think he'd at least read it! :-)
Do you, or anyone else reading this, know where I can find lab values for kids? I'll go google it, but if you know of a reputable site I'd appreciate it!
Thanks, Gina

A lot of things we say you won't find in medical articles. I don't know of a source for kids ranges except for Mosby's Diagnositic and Laboratory reference and I don't know how good the kids ranges are in it since I deal with and have little knowledge of what optimal levels of hormones are for young kids.
You're welcome, Chris

I am in need of some advice/words of wisdom. We are waiting on getting my son's stim test scheduled (the 5 year old), but he keeps having these meltdowns that I can't do anything about. I want to rub cortisone on him, but I know it will mess up the test.
It starts very simply with him refusing to do something I've asked him to do. Like a little while ago I asked him to complete his homework and he said he didn't want to and proceeded to start slamming things and throwing things. After asking him to calm down and do his homework and him refusing to do so, I took him to his room, where on the way he hit me repeatedly and screamed at me. I tried to get him to stop screaming to no avail. I left him for a while, but he continued to scream. I tried to go back in there to ask him what was going on - if something happened at school or something. He wouldn't stop screaming so I left him again. A little bit later he called me back in there and proceeded to tell me he wanted to live somewhere else and that he had packed everything he was taking with him. (He did actually pack some of his things.) I explained to him that him saying that was very hurtful to mommy and it made me sad.
It just so happened today that we are getting an alarm installed on the house. About 10 minutes after my son announced that he was leaving to live somewhere else, the guy happened to test the alarm. Well, my son came out and told me his legs were shaking from the alarm and came over and hugged me and cried. I sat down in my chair with him and he fell asleep within a few minutes.
This is very typical of these outbursts. I know they are from him having no cortisol, but I need the stim test to show the doc he actually needs a prescription for it. I am ordering some online whether the doctor says he needs it or not. I had actually called the doctor's office yesterday to ask when we could get him scheduled. The doc is new to Vegas and is figuring out how to do things and for whatever reason they haven't figured out how to get the stim test ordered correctly - there is a place here in town that will do the blood draws and injection all in the same place.
What can I do for my son until then? These outbursts are not very frequent, but are becoming more and more severe. Wouldn't this be a clue to the doctor that the kids is having SOME KIND OF HORMONE PROBLEM? I've been giving him Vit B complex and Vit C and I've taken everything I can take out of his diet, short of him starving. He gets no milk, except maybe at school, which I can request that he not have it if I need to. He gets organic whole foods as much as he'll eat them, although we aren't 100% there. It's nearly impossible to be completely organic in Vegas, but we do our best.
I don't know if there's really anything I really need to hear, but some understanding words from someone who may be going through the same thing may help. I'm just beyond knowing what to do. Well, I know what to do, but I can't do it until we get that darn stim test. I guess prayer would help!
Thanks for letting me vent at least. I so appreciate this opportunity to even be able to do that. Gina

On Friday (the morning after all that stuff with my son happened) the ped endo called me back and I told him what happened. He still doesn't think it's low cortisol. He wants me to consider other things, like psychiatric illness! Ugh. Why don't they KNOW that psych illness is usually from HORMONE IMBALANCE? ??!!!!!! Geeze. What do I have to do to get through to these people? Anyway, just wanted to say that. Would love some insight from someone. Gina

So, my son is at it again this morning. He wanted cereal for breakfast. I asked him what kind and I didn't get an answer. A few minutes later I asked again. He had gone to his room and was crying because he wanted Froot Loops and he knew we didn't have any. I asked him to come to where I was so we could talk and he said 'NO! I don't want to!' So I went to his room and tried to talk to him, but he just screamed at me. When he has these 'episodes' he ends up being very disrespectful to me, which I will not tolerate, so he either gets privlidges taken away (TV, video games, etc...) or he gets a spanking. (I know some don't agree with spanking, and it's certainly not my first choice either. I reserve it for severe infractions only.) I've tried everything and NOTHING works. And of course the doctor wants to tell me my son is psychotic! He has NO cortisol - only 1 detectible level all day and it was his morning one, which was a 3 out of 13-24! How can this kid possibly deal with ANY KIND OF STRESS? So anyway, a few minutes ago I walked by his room and I heard him saying "I hate [this toy] and I hate [that toy]!" etc... I called the doctor again about getting the stim test scheduled and they keep giving me the run around. They say they are taking care of it today. Well, I'll believe it when I see it. I started crying and told the girl to please do it today, that I have to start my son on meds quickly because I can not keep living like this. I still don't have myself all straightened out, and I'm now dealing with a screaming 5 year old who hates living here. I'm taking extra cortisol as I need it, but it's still hard to watch your son behave like that. I don't know how much longer I can do this. I'm giving him B complex and C for now, but it's all I can do until the stim is done. Hopefully the stim will show something... anything. Frustrated and feeling alone, Gina
