Doing research - again - and am confused about the cortisol/sleep relationship. I have depressed cortisol (this is what mayo terms it, but so far won't treat it) and I go through phases were I fall asleep and wake up 3-4 hours later not feeling like a slept at all and then waking up every hour after that till I finally fall back a sleep aroun 4 a.m. and wake up at 7 feeling exauhsted. I know that your cortisol rythym has a lot to do with how you sleep. Can someone spell it out for me in laymans terms or direct me to a really good article. Thanks!

Hi there,
Sorry bout that.
Yes, low cortisol can cause insomnia and is probably due to resulting low blood sugar. Are you currently taking HC? If so, when and what time? What about thyroid meds?

I am not taking anything HC yet. I would like to but am waiting for my doc to run more pituitary testing. I have a prescription for armour but don't want to start it until I get the cortisol worked out. Is there anything I can do to help it? I am starting to notice that I sleep bad on days that I feel like my blood sugar is having a hard time figurin out what it wants to do. Some days I am o.kay and then somedays I have the shakes, feel sick to my stomache and am dizzy upon standing. Sometimes it gets better after I eat and sometime it doesn't. I've tried protien and sugar and nothing seems to make a difference when it is all screwy. Any ideas for that?
Thanks!

Low cortisol can impact glucose regulation. When my cortisol is low I feel exactly the way you do. I feel like this if I am busy at work, late for my next dose, physical exertion.
Have you had your Morning cortisol, Morning ACTH tested and/or saliva cortisol testing done yet?
You are wise to hold off on the Armour until your cortisol is worked out.
You are welcome, Laurie
