Hi
I just found this forum as I was researching adrenal fatigue. I suspect that I have had adrenal fatigue for a while and have some questions specific to a recent incident.
Some background. I had hashimotos thyroiditis and a goiter and for a while they had a hard time controlling it with meds. After a while I would go hyper and looking back it seemed when I tried to upregulate the thyroid meds it would pool in my system and make me hyper.
Due to a thyrotoxic episode I had the thyroid removed and am currently on lexoxyl. I also was low in B12 and have corrected that but remain low in iron and take prescription iron to combat it. Was also low in Vit D but have corrected that as well to low normal. Understand both are probably result of hypo thyroid and bad absorption and possibly sluggish liver function. Also have high cholesterol and high trigs. I can provide lab numbers if needed. I ahev also noticed that in the past with my labs that whenver my sodium was under 140 I have not felt as well as when it is 140 or above. And my potassium is also in the 4.2 range or higher and the balance of the two seem out of whack versus Dr Rind's page.
Here is my current situation that I am concerned over. I have frozen shoulder and two weeks ago the ortho doc gave me a cortisone shot. By the second day I was extremely anxious and my muscles just felt like they could not work and were not only weak but felt severely spasmed as if my electrolyte balance was off.
It would get even worse in the morning when I tried to take my thyroid meds. The feeling was similar to when I would go hyper on the thyroid meds when I had a thyroid. I also had this tremendous flight or fight feeling as this all was happening. I should also add that since the cortisone shot that I have had a tremendous frontal headache. I have also been very breathless and had some heart palpitations but cannot say that the palpitions were that significant. But that headace was significant.
I also felt like I could not hang onto water. I was not drinking as much as I was urinating out. For a while now I don't feel like I hang onto water very well. Also on a side topic having sever tearing issue with one eye with blocked tear duct but wondering if the eye and sinus problems are related to not being able to hang onto water.
I talked to my doc about how I was reacting to the shot after two days and we cut my 100mcg dose of levoxyl in half and she said that sometimes steroids have that effect and its upregulating me too much and the steroids should leave my system in 2 weeks.
This weekend was close to the 2 week period and I just felt like i was crashing. After a light workout on Saturday and taking my thyroid meds I felt so exhausted and the muscles again felt weak and spasmed and I felt hyper thyroid and also that same flight or fight anxiety feeling.
Over the weekend I started 1000mg of VitC and did the salt water and it did make me feel calmer and slightly better and able to cope.
But again Monday morning I tried to go back closer to my normal dose of thyroid meds and just cannot do it without the adverse effects. Today I took no thyroid med and felt so much better than yesterday.
This morning I paid to have my blood tested and had them do the cortisol, electrolytes, renin, ACTH and aldosterone and TSH. It was day 7 of my cycle or right around there. Although I have to say that everything seemed much worse as I was going into my cycle and the progesterone was falling. Also I used to be able to tolerate birth control pills but now when on them it raises my blood pressure too much and I cannot tolerate. I have had my sex hormones tested and they are low and my endo called my hypogonadism. But I suspect the low adrenals just cannot tolerate the upregultion in the sex hormones either.
The last time I had my sex hormones tested it as day 14 of my cycle and the progesterone was 0.2 and the estradial was 53. I am only perimenpausal and still have regular periods. I have tried taking progesterone or DHEA but again as I try to upregulate I feel that fear of dying and flight or fight response.
I should have the blood results in 2 days. I am also researching to do another saliva test. my last results were a year old but here they are...
930A 9.4 Low (13-24 range)
130P 4.4 Low (5-8 range)
7P 2.5 Low (4-7)
1030P 1.8 (1-3)
Any thoughts? My current endo does not believe in adrenal fatigue and I can find one that does but right now I want to help myself and get through the effects of this cortisone shot.
I'll report the results from this morning as soon as I get them.
Just wondering if for me if its more cortisol related or aldosterone related. I am also curious as to what stage I possibly might be in if this is adrenal fatigue.
Thanks for any help. I appreciate it (I am a mod on a site and know how helpful places like these can be)
