Hi. I've been trying to find out why I'm so irritable all the time, and I suffer PMS for 2 weeks. I'm almost 35.
I was on BCPs for about 15 years, then I decided to stop several years ago when I was 29. 2 mths later I became pregnant. I haven't been on BCPs since then.
I got my period back 8 mths after my son was born (2004), and several cycles later my cycles became really wacky... I would spot for 1 day, then 24 hours later my period would start. It would last for about a week, day 1 being the heaviest. So I have to deal with almost 2 weeks of being on my period.
My cycles are pretty regular at 28 days.
Do you know which hormone causes the stopping and restarting? It's quite annoying, and it seems like I suffer PMS longer because of it.
I just read about when I should have my hormone test done, and it said day 3 of your cycle. When should my day 1 be, the day that I start to spot, or the day my period starts?
I'm such an emotional mess after ovulation. I eliminated yeast overgrowth which helped a lot w/ irritability, and I'm taking a truckload of supplements now for other issues (adrenal support, vitamins, minerals, etc).
Thank you, Katie

Hi Katie, I've listed the labs you should get below. These should be done at 8am and fasting, on day three of your cycle (starting from when you spot): - FSH - LH - LH/FSH Ratio - Estradiol - Progesterone - Testosterone - SHGB - FAI - DHEAS - Free Testosterone If you have the cash, also get: - Androstenedione - Estrone *available USA - Estriol *available USA PMS & menstrual problems in general can be caused by hormones other than the sex hormones listed above. Can you be more specific about your symptoms - even if they seem non-significant - to give us a clue? Cheers

It's mostly irritability. I'm a SAHM to a 4.5yo son that knows how to push buttons. Also on regular days I have no patience, low energy, low motivation, low tolerance for frustration, etc. I was actually diagnosed with ADD last year and was put on stimulants which helped a little, but I had to quit after 6 mths due to side effects. Most of the symptoms went away after I eliminated yeast overgrowth, but something else is still making me really irritable. I'm generally high-cortisol person, and taking something to lower it helps a little too, but that lost effect after about 3 days.
Thanks, Katie

Hi Katie, Those symptoms can be due to high or low cortisol. Have you had it tested recently? If not, in addition to the sex hormones listed above, make sure you get ACTH and cortisol drawn. Cheers
