Starting thyroid medication has definitely helped my cycle, so I would guess my sex hormones as well. Before I started thyroid hormone replacement, I bled every 2 weeks and never ovulated. Now, my cycles are almost normal and I do ovulate. The problem that I'm having now that has not gone away is a short luteal phase and spotting before my period.
I don't have the exact numbers yet, but last cycle I had blood drawn for Estradiol and Progesterone on days 5, 7 and 9 past ovulation. On days 5 and 7 they were fine, but by day 9 they had taken a nosedive. So I've been told I have a type 3 Luteal Phase Defect and should get HCG shots on days 5, 7 and 9 past ovulation to keep the Estrogen and Progesterone up.
Does this sound right to you guys? Opinions, advice?

This is interesting to me. I always thought I had leutal phase defect. I could not get pregnant and had miscarriages b/c egg was too premature. BUT...I started to take DHEA about 2-3 before I thought I ovulated and bang.. a beautiful healthy pregnancy. I experimented and didn't do the DHEA and either no pregnancy or early miscarriage. Then 2 more times used DHEA and bang 2 more beautiful babies. Used DHEA 3 times in my life and have been blessed with 3 babies. I think the DHEA helped the luteal defect, maybe similar actions to HGH? What do you think? But now I am interested in your HGH shots.. What is type 3 are theer other types? Please let me know how things go. Good luck Christine

I think the DHEA helped the luteal defect, maybe similar actions to HGH? What do you think? I've never heard of taking DHEA for luteal phase defects. That's very interesting! What prompted you to start taking it? I've had DHEA tested twice...here were my results: 08.14.08 DHEA Sulfate – 43 (range 35 – 430) <-while on BC 01.12.09 DHEA – 573 (range 102 – 1185) <-off of BC for 3 months The lab nurses said that DHEAS and DHEA are the same thing...is that true? I have no idea what the other types are - that's just what she called mine. I tried to find them online, but never could. My guess is that one has to do with Estrogen dropping off too early, one has to do with Progesterone dropping off too early, and the other has to do with both dropping off to early. Well it seems to be working. I'm on day 11 past ovulation with no spotting and my temps are still well above the coverline: www.fertilityfriend.com/home/21e772The problem is, now I have horrible insomnia I wasn't sleeping great before...but now I'm sleeping even worse. I wake up between 1:30 and 3:30am and never really get back to sleep. My husband found a study online that showed the same reaction to HCG in rats...I'll have to see if he can find it again. On Monday, I got blood drawn again to see exactly how well it's working (testing both progesterone and estrogen on day 9 past ovulation), so hopefully I'll get those results soon. Once I do, I'll ask my doctor about the insomnia to see if she also thinks it's related to the shots. I have no idea what else it could be at this point. It might be worth it to me to do the shots when I'm trying to get pregnant...but until then, I don't think I can deal with this insomnia every month.

Hi there, I don't know much about hCG but in other forums I have read of men using it for testosterone production with great results... I don't know how it goes with women. I do kinda wonder why your pituitary 'konks-out' ... i.e. whether it's a defect or some kind of 'subclinical' secondary hypogonadism. How long have you had this problem for? Have you had your cortisol levels tested? Low cortisol can also result in low sex hormones and is oftentimes resolved with replacement. Cheers

How long have you had this problem for? It's hard to say, since I was on birth control for 14 years and just went off it last October. But I've had the issue every month since I went off BC. Not yet - I'm planning to do that saliva test next month BTW, last night I slept pretty normally...so maybe it was just a fluke?

I was thinking the sleeping problem might be because of resultant alterations in progesterone to estrogen ratio, but since HCG mimics LH, progesterone should go higher... which means you should be sleepier I would be interested to see what your saliva shows. It might also be worth getting morning ACTH and cortisol drawn as well - just to see what the pituitary is up to.

Wow, I don't know if these levels are normal with HCG injections or not...but I just got my results for the blood draw on Monday (DPO9) and they're through the roof:
02.09.09 Estradiol, Fasting – 313.7 H @ peak +9 (luteal range 15 – 260) 02.09.09 Progesterone, Fasting – 42.7 H @ peak +9 (luteal range 1.7 – 27.0)
I'm 13 days past ovulation now and no sign of menstruation on the horizon. If it hasn't started by Monday, I'll call the doctor.
