I was looking up more information on Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency and saw a blurb on a website about empty sella. I remembered seeing a note on one of my labs from my MRI that said "incidental note of a partial empty sella". I have been seeing medical documents that relate that to pituitary problems. Does anyone know anything about this?

Yes, empty sella and partially empty sella may effect your adrenal hormones. I have the same thing. My pituitary is about 2mm in size...what you need to do is to make sure every year that you have labs drawn to check the efficiency of your pituitary gland. They checked my pituitary by having an insulin tolerance test and I need to have that done at least every 2 years to make sure what's left of my pit is working ok. Alot of our bodies hormones are regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary....which then effect everything else like our thyroid and adrenals....and I have both those problems too. oh well...Good Luck w/ your searching for information.

My doctors didn't say a word about the partially empty sella - I can't find any info about it on the clinics website. I haven't had any pituitary function tests done. Any idea where I can find something that proves I need to have it looked at becuase of the partially empty sella? I am desperately trying to find answers to my nausea, hair loss and messed up periods. I think it is a pituitary thing but I can't convince the docotrs to look in to it - Great fun :-)

hi I have been diagnosed with empty sella syndrome and my pituitary gland is squashed! On the MRi scan it has the appearance of a crescent shape. I am in the process of being referred to an endo and have just had blood tests to see how my hormones are. I had blood tests done in the summer and it showed that I have low/normal cortisol so I asked for a referral to an endo. I am picking up my results of my blood tests today however I have been informed by my GP receptionist that they are all 'normal'!! My empty sella was diagnosed by a neurologist after I went to see him for recurrent migraines. he did not really explain what the empty sella was so I had to research it on the internet. I suggested the hormone testing as perhaps this might explain some of the symptoms I had been having. You should ask if you have empty sella and if you have symptoms that could be related to hormones push for the tests, I had to. Best Wishes BB

just having "messed up" periods may be enough reason to have an insulin tolerance test done...ask your doctor you never know he may say yes....you have reason...since your pituitary is smaller than the norm. An insulin tolerance test may make you feel not so great, as they drop your glucose level to about 30-40...then check your hormones for an hour or 2...they draw lots of blood and you have to have an IV. I did ok w/ it. R
