I firstly want to apologise for the time it has taken for me to update. I have been going through a nightmare. I mentioned that a friend of mine was having a baby and as you was have a c-section and is on her own she was going to come stay with me after the birth for a couple of weeks. Unfortunatly days after the safe arrival of her son( my godson) he began having major problems, apneas and seizures. About 10 days after he was born he was dx with hypophosphotasia and he had the most serious case of it, his brain was affected as were his heart and lungs and we were told that he could pass away at any stage.
He was baptised and we spent as much time as we could with him, obviously juggling my own children, he passed away on the 17th March and we went to his funeral yesterday. It has been incredibly hard and makes you realise that having a healthy baby is a miracle and I am so thankful for my own children.
Anyway in the midst of all of this I have still been feeling very unwell and I saw the endocrinologist a week or so ago and he has dx me with siadh, he was quite old and quite arrogant and I did feel a bit intimated. He explained to me more about siadh and how when I drink fluid some of it stays in my body and so dilutes my sodium. He also explained that if I have more salt I will actually retain even more fluid and that in turn would dilute my sodium further.
He has advised me to stick to 1.5 l of fluid a day and that includes any type of fluid including milk, custard, jello. He said we get most of the water we need from food and that for an average apple, it would give you 70mls of water and that people actually drink too. He feels it is most likely the gabapentin that is doing it and that it may have been like this for a while and gone undetected. He said although endep can cause problems such as siadh he doesnt think that is likely. He explained that getting up to go the the bathroom so many times at night is because the excess fluid that has built up in my body has no where to go and so I have to go to the bathroom to fix it.
I haven't started the fluid restriction yet because of what has been going on and I am beggining to think it is going to be so hard for me. I have always drunk alot of fluids but I guess I have to weigh up that against the choice of coming off gabapentin. I have been in alot of pain lately esp headaches and feeling stiff and I am wondering if the siadh could be the cause of some of the pain if I am carrying that much fluid. Also the breast tenderness might be related...what do you think?
He has also given me blood work to have done in 5 weeks I have to have e/lfts,t4,t3,tsh,lh,fsh,oestradiol,progesterone,prolactin,plasma and urine osmolality. Then 6 weeks later e/lfts,t3,t4,tsh,plasma and urine osmolality.
I got some blood work done just before I saw him and sodium was 137 so within range, the only things out of range was urea which scariliy low at 1.9 range(3.0-8.0) Also iron was low again at 6 range (9-30)
So thats about it for now...feeling frustrated and sad and just wish I could feel better.
